Cementerio General

One day we decided to go to the Cementerio General in Santiago. We read about the place at the website “lonelyplanet.com” and decided to check it out. General means graveyard on Spanish.

The only ways we could get to Cementerio General was with car or walking. When we went to the little town Lampa we walked the whole way so we decided to walk to the Cementerio General. It is 9,9km long to walk and it will take 2 hours to go. We had to be careful on our way because some place there was missing pavements.

When we first got there we saw a dome entrance way. It was really amazing. When we went trough the dome we saw a lot of sculptures standing around. When we went a little longer inside we saw a lot of graves. It was really much interesting to see and we took a lot of pictures with Cecilie’s new camera, which she bought.

After we had looked around we met a little cute man who was a tour guide who was called Peter. At the graveyard we decided to ask him some questions about the place and its story.

Interview:

Pe = Peter
Ca = Camilla

Ca: Hey my name is Camilla and this is my friends Cecilie, Liam and Benjamin.
Pe: Hey my name is Peter and I am a guide here.
Ca: Can we ask you some questions?
Pe: Sure you can. That is why I am here.
Ca: I have heard that there are a lot of famous people who are buried here.
Pe: Yes it is. 2 people I know is buried here is: Salvador Allende and Victor Jara.
Ca: Who are they?
Pe: Salvador Allende was the president of Chile. He lived from 1908-1973. Victor Jara was a really famous poet and folksinger. He lived from 1932-1973.
Ca: Wow that is very interesting to hear about. Can I ask you another question?
Pe: yes of course you can.
Ca: how is it to work here as a guide?
Pe: Well it is really interesting and I meet new people every day that has a lot of new questions.
Ca: Have you met a person who asked you a question you didn’t know the answer to?
Pe: Yes I have. One day a little boy came to me and asked how many peoples who was buried here.
Ca: Wow. That is a difficult question.
Ca: Look at the time we have to go. It has been very nice to talk to you Peter.
Pe: Thanks. It has been very nice to get to know you guys too.

After a long day at the graveyard we decided to start walking home again. We had learned so much new when we was there and we had a memory for ever.
