Cathedral Metropolitana

One day we decided to go to Cathedral Metropolitana in the middle of Santiago, which is one of many cathedrals with the same name, because it basically means ‘the cathedral of the city’. To get there, we had to take the underground rail which was a great opportunity to meet new people.

The Cathedral Metropolitana is the most important Catholic cathedral in Chile, and it was a beautiful sight. It had two towers in the front and it was very high so we felt small. When we got in, we could se the graves of very important persons in Chileans history. It was also a grave which keeps the hearts of the young heroes from the battle in Concepcion.
It really touched us to hear about the young people
who had fought for their country and their freedom.

We wanted to know more about the cathedral, so we asked a nice guide if he could tell us something more about the art in the big church.


“First of all, there are a lot of altars in this cathedral, and most of them are built in honour of persons that have been important for our culture and history. There’s also a name list and an oration which is hanging on the wall, and the other art in here, is symbolising different things, and most of the art is also historical,” he said.

We became curious about how it was to work in the cathedral, and when we asked, he told us that it was very exciting and he was honoured to get to work near so many historical and important things.


”Sometimes I meet people who don’t have any respect for the history or the culture, and then I just ask them to leave, because when they don’t respect the church, they don’t respect Chile or me,” he said.


We thought it was a very nice and clever guide and we agreed in everything he said to us. When we were done visiting the cathedral, we thanked our guide and started on our way home, with our head full of nice thoughts and memories.
